Feeding Large Dog Breeds
Informational, not a feeding prescription. These figures are general guidance, not veterinary advice. Calorie and portion ranges are transparently computed from the published NRC energy formula (RER = 70 × kg0.75) applied to the breed’s weight range — an estimate, not a per-dog prescription. Individual needs vary with metabolism, body condition, neuter status and activity. Confirm your dog’s plan with your veterinarian.
Large dog breeds (roughly 51-90 lb) are typically fed large-breed adult formula; LARGE-BREED PUPPY (controlled-calcium) formula during growth per AAFCO >70 lb-adult clause, in large kibble, across 2 meals a day. During growth, AAFCO labelling distinguishes a controlled-calcium large-breed puppy formula for this size class.
These are general, informational guidelines by size class — not veterinary advice, and not a substitute for matching food to your individual dog. Some breeds and life stages have specific needs, so confirm the plan with your veterinarian.
